Tiered SAM
After successful initial 19770 trials, organisations can now apply to trial the tiered approach to SAM. Organisations interested in a trial can find out more below, or from information@bcsltd.com
ISO/IEC News JTC1 SC7 carries new resolution (Niigata, Japan Plenary 2010) for tiered development of 19770-1 Software Asset Management. (WG21's editing group site with ISO/IEC standards developments is at www.stagedSAM.org;). ISO's move means industry trials can proceed in full alignment with an industry-owned approach, building one scheme for assessment and certification:

Industry Trials Achievements To-Date
(May 2006: ISO releases first SAM Processes standards - ISO/IEC 19770 Part 1 - Processes)
October 2007: Start of industry trials for recognising adoption of ISO/IEC 19770-1 Standard SAM Processes.
May 2008: Live assessment trials of 19770-1 proceed (all tiers):
- readiness checks and formal assessments: Documentation review and substantive testing;
- involving expert assessors from industry Certification Bodies (e.g. LRQA);
- WG21 also commissions market trials, of approaches to staged SAM, including the tiered approach.
May 2009: Industry standards adopts tiers:
- Hyderabad meeting of Working Group 21 also makes decision to base stages upon submitted and tested tiers;
- WG21 recommends drafting of Tiered SAM standard, retaining processes and structure consistent with 19770 Part 1.
May 2010:Market voices further requirements for an open approach to SAM assessment:
- SAM industry practitioners ask: With the advancement of 19770-1, what options are now available for Certification?; - Growing UK interest in extending ISO certification scheme trials to offer a Tiered SAM assessment;
- SAMleaders responds with development of a stage-by-stage approach to trials, committed to an open industry-owned scheme.
Autumn 2010: - application is now open for next wave of industry trials.
